Information about package printing for cds.

Compact discs are usually packaged in a transparent plastic case called a 'jewel case'. The liner notes will typically be a 12cm x 12cm booklet with a separate back cover, or a single 12cm x 24cm cover folded to fit the entire case.

The name 'jewel case' refers to the hinges, which resemble the jewel bearings watchmakers use, and are considered the weakest part of the case, given their tendency to break.

The next step in CD packaging is the 'super jewel box', which offers a greatly strengthened hinge mechanism and a far more advanced design. Unfortunately, the card insert in the back is slightly different in size to the standard jewel case and cannot be used as a direct replacement. This case design was developed by Philips and other CD format developers first as a DVD case and then as a CD case. These cases can also hold the upcoming DVD/CD discs and are much more forgiving of rough treatment.

Alternatives to the standard jewel case also include a cardboard sleeve, super-thin plastic cases, and a plastic center-hole insert inside a cardboard jacket.
