Mandatory labeling, especially for food and drug products, is required in most developed countries and many developing countries. It allows the consumer to make an informed choice and to avoid products associated with allergies or other health problems.

Labeling has been a contentious subject since the late 1800's, pitting consumer advocates against manufacturers. In light of past scandals involving deceptive labeling, the U.S. and Canada require a 'nutrition facts' table on the label while the European Union requires a 'nutrition information' table that may also have standardized icons to indicate allergens.

Genetically modified food has increased the debate regarding mandatory labeling. Advocates of 'total disclosure' argue that the consumer has a right to know the origins of the product and to determine if they want to expose themselves to possible harm from consuming genetically altered food. The food industry argues that many well-controlled studies conclude that this food is safe. They also point out that for many commodities (corn, wheat, potatoes, etc.) the identity of the grower and the chain of custody are unknown.

Mandatory labeling has altered the way we buy and consume both food and drugs. Today's shopper would be very reluctant to buy a product that did not have a complete label that conforms to the standards set by the Food and Drug Administration.
